MBSR: Going Deeper into Healing
A challenging self-help program for emotional healing and personal growth by John Steven Shealy, PhD
This self-help program builds on the 8-week MBSR Home Study Course (about MBSR), group training or in-depth meditation program. It was developed for those individuals with a well-established meditation practice (e.g. can sit quietly and still for 45 to 60 minutes) who are seeking to use their capacity to sit in the presence of discomfort to move through some of their emotional "baggage."
It will be helpful to those working with this program to have already begun moving along their path of emotional and psychological healing (e.g. a history of successful psychotherapy and/or having worked with other self-help programs with good benefit). However these capacities were developed, comfort with the emotional healing process will be essential for success with this program.
The program includes 23 articles (12 with test questions and 11 without) to help deepen your understanding of how meditation can be an aid in this type of personal healing and to provide a backdrop for the integration of meditation with emotional healing.
The program also includes a 45-minute Body Scan CD and a one-hour Deep Healing CD that follows. I developed and used these CDs for my MBSR and Mindfulness Based Group Psychotherapy programs. The Body Scan CD trains connectedness with the body and prepares you for the Deep Healing CD which guides you into a meditative state and then invites you to "call up your inner demons" so that you can face them calmly, sitting in a balanced meditative state and disarm the effects of this old conditioning with equinimity. Sounds simple and it is. But it is also challenging to say the least.
As you can tell from this description, this is not a program for anyone unwilling or unable to face painful and frightening inner experiences. But if you have read down this far and have not yet been frightened away, this may be a useful program for you. If you take this leap, I wish you well on your inner journey.
Cost: A donation of between $50.00 to $250.00 is suggested. If your financial situation prevents you from making even a $50 donation, please donate whatever amount you can afford. In the past, I have found that those in a more comfortable financial position will donate more so it all balances out in the end. What is most important is that you get the help you are seeking from this powerful self-help program.
