Sharing MBSR: A Tool Kit for Mental Health and Allied Professionals

by John Steven Shealy, PhD

This tool kit is designed for the mental health or allied professional (e.g. nurse, midwife, school psychologist) who wishes to share MBSR to their clients and/or colleagues. These materials could also be useful to those engaged in teaching advanced psychology or psychotherapy courses at the university undergraduate or graduate level.

This Tool Kit includes:

* The 8-week Home Study program includes four 45-minute CDs that I recorded and used in my regular 8-week MBSR programs. These training CDs include: The Body Scan, Guided Sitting Meditation and Mindful Hatha Yoga I and II. Included also are 8 weekly homework material packets which total 66 pages of readings, exercises and suggestions for deepening one’s mindfulness practice and for making the most of this experience. I have also added 98 pages of supplemental articles related to the impact of MBSR in the areas of: intimate relationships, pain management, healthy eating, psychotherapy and prison work.

** The Self-Help Healing program includes a one-hour Deep Healing CD that I developed and used in my MBSR and Mindfulness Based Group Psychotherapy programs. There are also 23 articles (12 with test questions and 11 without) that can be used in CEU programs or to deepen your clients understanding of how meditation can be an aid in this type of personal healing.

Details about MBSR programs that can be offered using these materials.

Cost: A donation of between $250.00 to $500.00 is suggested for this combination of all three programs. The higher cost reflects the assumption that anyone using these materials will be drawing income from their use and are not simply seeking personal benefit or healing. Another payment option is to make a $100 donation now, followed by 10% of the gross income directly arising from teaching this program for your first 18 months.

This option will allow you easy access to the materials so that you can evaluate their usefulness as well as your desire to share MBSR in your personal and professional community. This option reflects my confidence that you will find the materials useful and also that if you market the programs effectively, you will be well rewarded for you efforts. These are popular programs and many new teachers have come forward in recent years and created a successful niche for themselves while at the same time developing their psychotherapy practice. I wish you luck on your journey!
